BigB reveals the story behind his surname

Bachchan said that his mother belongs to a Sikh family and his father was from a Kayastha family in Uttar Pradesh

Bollywood Shahenshah Amitabh Bachchan mediated between a contestant and her father on Monday’s episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati season 13.
 
The contestant named Bhagyashree Tayade was from Jalgaon in Maharashtra. She had revealed to the superstar of bollywood how relationships with her family were broken after she had a love marriage.
 
After which, BigB asked her to look into the camera and deliver a message to her father, who might be watching the show.
 
A sobbing Bhagyashree apologised to her father in the show. BigB also requested her father to please set aside his hard feelings and to restore his relationship with his daughter.
 
Amitabh Bachchan then explained why this conversation was personal for him and said “I take this personally because I am a product of an inter-caste marriage too."
 
Bachchan said that his mother belongs to a Sikh family and his father was from a Kayastha family in Uttar Pradesh.
 
Bachchan said, "Their families opposed for a while, but they agreed and all the bonds got restored. I’m talking about the year 1942.”
 
BigB also revealed that his father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan who was a famous Indian poet intentionally chose the surname 'Bachchan'.
 
Amitabh Bachchan said “My father deliberately gave us the name Bachchan, because the surname indicates caste. When I was about to get admitted to school, I was asked about my surname."
 
He revealed that his parents decided then that they wouldn’t give the surname of a caste, but would rather be the pen name of his father which is the name he used to write poems to hide indication of his caste.
 
Later in the show, the superstar called Bhagyashree’s father and father-daughter duo mend their relationship.
