The 59-year-old actor, James Michael Tyler, who is best known for playing Gunther — the Central Perk manager and Rachel’s admirer on the TV show "Friends", revealed that he is undergoing chemotherapy treatment after being diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer in 2018.
The actor, for the first time publicly opened up about his cancer battle while appearing on the "Today" show Monday.
He explained that why he was only able to appear virtually to attend HBO Max's "Friends" reunion last month but not in-person due to his health.
Tyler said that doctors first discovered his cancer during a routine physical, in which he took his first prostate specific antigen (PSA) test.
Though his early days were hopeful and confident but the cancer mutated during the pandemic and spreaded to his bones and spine, to which it resulted in his inability to walk.
While holding his back tears,he said “Of course, it’s stage 4. Late-stage cancer. So eventually, you know, it’s gonna probably get me."
He said earlier detection is key and that he regretted by not listening to his wonderful wife. And urges the viewers to get screened because if it caught early, then it is 99% treatable. With a teary-eyed Tyler hoped that his story will "save just one life" while he was encouraging others to get screened.
He said, "My goal this past year was to see my 59th birthday. I did that, May 28th." He added more,"My goal now is to help save at least one life by coming out with this news."
