It is relief for Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut as the Andheri court in Mumbai has granted bail to her after she moved the court for the cancellation of the bail able warrant that the court issued against her in the defamation case filed by lyricist Javed Akhtar. She has been granted bail upon furnishing a surety of INR 15,000 and a cash surety of INR 20,000, Bar and Bench reported.
Ranaut's statements at a last year for a news show had landed her in the legal trouble where she had spoken about a meeting with Akhtar in 2016 while discussing the alleged suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.
In connection with the aforesaid incident the veteran lyricist filed a complaint, alleging that derogatory statements were made against him and that she dragged his name while talking about a Bollywood "coterie." Akhtar filed a criminal complaint against Kangana on November 3, under Sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code.
Kangana Ranaut's advocate Rizwan Siddiquee had contended and he is going to challenge the entire proceeding of magistrate court before a higher court. He submitted that the Court therefore cannot proceed further.
According to the magistrate the accused has every right to challenge the order of this Court before Sessions Court and High Court.
This is not the first time, the actor has land into trouble for her controversial statements and tweets. Earlier a single-judge bench of the Karnataka High Court ordered that the FIR filed against her over her tweet about people opposing the new farm laws as she refer them as terrorists. Cases were also filed against her and her sister Rangoli Chandel, for hateful message on social media.
