Satyajit Ray’s son Sandip Ray is also a director and he grew up watching his father and Soumitra Chatterjee, the great working together. “It was one of world cinema’s most accomplished collaborations…. comparable with Fellini and Marcello Mastroianni and with Kurosawa and Mifune,” he said.

Soumitra Chatterjee's collaboration with Satyajit Ray started when he had gone to Ray to be cast in Pather Panchali in 1959 but Ray found him too old to play Apu hence later Ray casted Soumitra as Apu in Apur Sansar.

Another famous actress, Sharmila Tagore who played Soumitra's leading lady in several films including classics Apur Sansar and Devi says she doesn’t know of anyone as great as Soumitra.
