Prime Minister Modi, others condole death of Pandit Birju Maharaj

Birju Maharaj also practiced Hindustani classical music and he was also a vocalist

Pandit Birju Maharaj, the world famous Kathak dancer, has passed away due to a heart attack at the age of 83. The sad news was announced by his family members on Monday. He was one of the greatest Indian dancers and was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. 

After the news broke out, condolences poured in across social media. Numerous well known celebrities and famous personalities expressed their grief over the legend's passing. Politicians and top ministers also expressed their sadness. 

PM Narendra Modi also took to Twitter and said that he was “deeply saddened” at the demise of Pandit Birju Maharaj. 

“Deeply saddened at the demise of Pandit Birju Maharaj ji, who gave Indian dance form a unique recognition across the world. His passing is an irreparable loss to the entire art world. My condolences to his family and fans in this hour of grief,” PM Modi tweeted in Hindi.

Also, President Ram Nath Kovind took to Twitter and said that his passing marked the end of an era of Indian dance culture. 

Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath said that Birju Maharaj's passing was an immense loss to the art world and Indian culture and offered his condolences to the family.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called the legend ‘Maharaj ji’ in his message and said that he would be remembered for his huge contribution to the field of Indian classical dance.

 Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that   the country had lost a huge legend of the performing arts. 

Also many other personalities like singer Adnan Sami, Sarbananda Sonowal, Baijayant Jay Panda, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik, BJP National Spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, Samajwadi Party National Secretary Abhishek Mishra also expressed their heartfelt condolences. 

The legendary dancer Birju Maharaj was born in a Hindu Brahmin family. Renowned dancers Shambhu Maharaj and Lacchu Maharaj were his uncles. His father's name was Acchan Maharaj. Birju Maharaj also practiced Hindustani classical music and he was also a vocalist.
