BSE Sensex tanks over 500 points in early trade; Nifty slips below 15,800

Indian benchmark indices were trading with losses on Monday.

Indian stock market benchmarks Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex and broader NSE Nifty 50 began trading with losses on Monday morning amids negative global cues.

BSE Sensex was trading at 52,630 lower by 509 points or 0.9 per cent and the NSE Nifty 50 was 15,783, down 139 points or 0.88 per cent.

NTPC, Bharti Airtel, Titan, PowerGrid, Nestle India, HCL Technologies, Titan, and Reliance Industries were the only stocks on Sensex to be trading with gains.

HDFC Bank and HDFC were down more than 2 per cent, each as the top laggards, followed by ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank, SBI and Kotak Bank were among laggards.

On the global side, the Asian equities fell across the board, as depression took hold following rising COVID-19 infections and Wall Street traded in loss as well.

Bourses in Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo were trading in deep red territory in mid-session deals.
