India sees spectacular jumps in wealth; 40 Indians in billionaires list

Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries has tops the list; among the female entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar Shaw of Biocon tops the list

Amidst the world wide pandemic and uncertain future, India sees spectacular jumps in her wealth as 40 Indians have been added to the billionaires list. The Reports publish by Hurun Global Rich List 2021 has revealed this data, India is the home to third largest numbers of billionaires after China and USA.


Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries has tops the list with whooping net worth of USD 83 billion. His wealth grew by 24 percent in 2020. Adani family is second richest in India with net worth of USD 32 billion. The HCL chairperson Shiv Nadar is in third with net worth of USD 27 billion. Apart from the top three the other billionaires are Lakshmi Mittal of new worth USD 19 billion, Cyrus Poonawala of Serum Institute of India with net worth USD 18.5 billion, the Hinduja brothers with net worth USD 18 billion, Uday Kotak of Mahindra Bank with net worth USD 15 billion.


Among female entrepreneur Biocon's founder and managing director Kiran Mazumdar Shaw is the richest according to Hurun Global
Rich List 2021. Kiran Mazumdar Shaw's wealth rose by 41 per cent to USD 4.8 billion. Other top rich females are Godrej’s Smita V Crishnawho’s net worth USD 4.7 billion. The third female entrepreneur from India is Manju Gupta wife of Lupin founder DeshBandhu Gupta, whose net worth is currently USD 3.3 billion.


It is interesting to see the reports come at a time when the Indian economy is set to contract by over 7 per cent because of the impact of the ongoing pandemic, which is said to have severely impacted the poor.


Hurun India's Managing Director and Chief Researcher Anas Rahman Junaid said “Indian wealth creation is dominated by cyclical or traditional industries compared to tech-driven wealth creation in the US and China. When the tech-driven wealth creation reaches full potential, India could potentially beat USA in terms of the number of billionaires."
