Trinamool Congress MLA Jayanta Naskar, who had tested positive for coronavirus post assembly elections results in May, died at a hospital in Kolkata on Saturday evening, a medical department official said.
However, the 73-year-old legislator had tested negative for the disease on Friday. But his prolonged illness had damaged the lungs which resulted in his death, the official stated.
The official further added that Naskar was initially treated at the state-run MR Bangur Hospital and was shifted to a private medical facility a few days back.
West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC Supremo Mamata Banerjee condoled the MLA's family on his demise.
Mamata wrote, "Heartfelt condolences to the family & supporters of Jayanta Naskar. Deeply pained at this colossal loss. As a 3-time MLA from Gosaba, he had dedicated his life towards serving people and was always with us through our many struggles. He will be remembered dearly."
