Rahul Gandhi cancels Bengal poll rallies due to COVID surge, urges other leaders for same

He asked all political leaders "to think deeply about the consequences of holding large public rallies."

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday suspended his campaign for the West Bengal assembly elections owing to the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the country.


"In view of the Covid situation, I am suspending all my public rallies in West Bengal," said Rahul in a tweet.


The former Congress president also advised all political leaders "to think deeply about the consequences of holding large public rallies" under the current circumstances.


India reported 2,61,500 new cases in the last 24 hours, its highest single day surge since the pandemic began last year.


It is the fourth straight day of India reporting more than 2 lakh new cases.
