Swapan Dasgupta resigns from Rajya Sabha amidst row over nomination

BJP had announced that Swapan would be the party’s candidate from Tarakeshwar constituency.

Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta, who nominated by the Bharatiya Janata Party for the forthcoming West Bengal assembly elections, has resigned from the Upper House today amidst a row over his nomination.

The Trinamool Congress had decided to move a disqualification notice against Swapan for “violating the Tenth Schedule of the Constitution”, after the saffron party gave him ticket to contest.

The Tenth Schedule of the Constitution says a nominated member of Parliament shall be disqualified if he/she joins a political party after the expiry of six months from the date of taking the seat.

The Narendra Modi-led BJP announced on Sunday that Swapan would be the party’s candidate from Tarakeshwar constituency in Bengal that is going to assembly polls in eight phases starting March 27.
