Amidst an ongoing exodus from the ruling Trinamool Congress ahead of the West Bengal assembly elections, MLA Jitendra Tiwari, who had staged a dramatic return to TMC after threatening to join BJP in December, has now finally joined saffron party.
At one point of time, the two-time MLA from Pandabeswar in Paschim Barddhaman district was also Asansol mayor. “I have joined the BJP as I want to work for the development of the state. In TMC, it was no longer possible to work for the party,” Tiwari said.
Reacting to the development, the TMC said it is “good riddance” in the pre-poll stage. Elections to the 294-member state assembly will be held in eight phases from March 27 to April 29.
Last year, as former TMC heavyweight Suvendu Adhikari jumped ship, he had held talks with Tiwari on the latter joining him in the move.
