Every year different Puja authorities all over Kolkata take different themes for the idea of puja pandals. This year Jadavpur took a special theme and the subject is the struggle for existence, which is part of the everyday life of people living in the riverine and coastal villages of Bengal.

This is the theme of the Shyama Sangha, a puja which is held in a neighbourhood called Shyama Palli near Jadavpur 8B, is bhangon, or erosion.

The organizers at the Shyama Palli had made a giant wall of 40ft-wide and 8ft-high, serves as the background of the open pandal and is made of soil, the under-construction wall is symbolic of an earthen embankment about to give away in the face of tidal waves.

They have also made a significant structure is also made resembling a village home which has no  roof and stands beside the wall and there is a bamboo skeleton that serves as the base of a roof suggesting a storm has blown that  shelter away. The Durga idol is made of fibre, is a complete separate structure that will be engraved in the wall.
