Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government declared a grant of Rs 50,000 each to all 36,000 Durga Puja clubs in the state, 2,500 of them in Kolkata alone.
The announcement was made by her Chief Secretary HK Dwivedi.
Making such move, Mamata clearly showing her desperate need to save her home turf, where it's a must for her to win. The Bhabanipur assembly bypoll, which she is contesting, is scheduled for September 30, along with elections in two other assembly seats.
However, it seems that the rival party isn't happy with the announcement.
Sources in the Bharatiya Janata Party said that the Chief Secretary' announcement is a violation of the model code.
"The politics of dole that the Trinamool does...that's what has been done. It's a violation of the model code. We want the CEO to take appropriate steps. We will go the EC office tomorrow," said BJP state Vice-President Pratap Banerjee.
Nonetheless, Mamata is desperate to win the seat, and why shouldn't she? Because if she loses, the TMC supremo had to bid goodbye to her decade-old throne, even after thrashing out Narendra Modi-led party in the Assembly Elections.
