Andhra: 10 die in limestone quarry explosion

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy ordered an inquiry into the matter and also conveyed his deepest condolences to the families of the blast victims

A limestone quarry in Andhra Pradesh's Kadapa had blasted resulted in killing of at least ten labourers on Saturday.


The incident took place at Mamillapalle village of Kalasapadu block where at least 40 workers were present at the time of the incident. The explosion was so intense that it created tremors in the adjacent villages.


Relief and rescue operations for the others trapped under the debris had already started after the incident.


Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has expressed his concern over the death of the labourers and inquired about the possible reasons behind the accident with the officials. He had also ordered an inquiry into the matter.


According to police investigation, the explosion took place when the detonators were being shifted within the quarry site. Most of the victims are believed to be from Pulivendula, the native village of Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Meanwhile, TDP National President and former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu also expressed grief over the death of the workers.


He sought an explanation on how mining works were allowed at a time when there was an 18-hour curfew in progress all over the state due to pandemic.
