Bengal approves bursting crackers in Kali Puja, but with conditions

Keeping in mind of environment's safety, the Mamata Banerjee-led government has given nod to burst only 'green crackers'

Just day after declaring ban on tobacco across the state, the West Bengal government on Wednesday allowed bursting crackers during Kali Puja and Chhath Puja, but with conditions.

Keeping in mind of environment's safety, the Mamata Banerjee-led government has given nod to burst only 'green crackers'.

The second condition is meanwhile time-bound, i.e. during Kali Puja people can only burst 'green crackers' from 8 pm to 10 pm, and on Chhath Puja from 6 am to 8 am.

The announcement comes at a time when the Centre has warned the state of rising COVID-19 cases in Kolkata post Durga Puja celebrations.

Meanwhile, the state government also given nod to burst free crackers on Christmas and New Year green crackers from 11:55 pm to 12:30 am.

As per an order issued by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board, there has been a complete ban on the sale and bursting of firecrackers, except green crackers in the state.

However, a PIL has also been filed in the Calcutta High Court seeking a complete ban on firecrackers, even green crackers. The matter will be heard on Friday.
