Gurugram-Delhi border witnessed a massive traffic snarl as vehicles entering the national capital are being checked by Delhi Police and paramilitary jawans, in wake of Bharat Bandh called by farmer organisations today.
Earlier today, the police closed traffic movement from UP towards Ghazipur. Delhi-Amritsar National Highway was also blocked at Shahabad in Haryana's Kurukshetra.
The farmer leaders said ambulances, doctors and those seeking to travel for emergency purposes will be allowed to pass through.
Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait said the farmers had not and will not seal areas. However, they wanted to send across a stern message to the government.
The bandh is being observed from 6am to 4pm during which all government and private offices, educational and other institutions, shops, industries and commercial establishments will be closed throughout the country.
Major opposition parties, including the Congress, AAP, BSP, Swaraj India, Telugu Desam Party and the Left, have extended their support to the protesting farmers.
