Court sentences Ram Rahim to life imprisonment in Ranjit Singh's murder case

The special CBI court in Haryana's Panchkula found all five guilty earlier this month

After years of investigation, Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and four others have been sentenced to life imprisonment.
 
The verdict came after it was proved that the  convicts murdered the manager Ranjit Singh nearly two decades ago. The four others people are Krishan Lal, Jasbir Singh, Avtar Singh and Sabdil who were sentenced to jail.
 
The main accused Gurmeet Ram Rahim will also have to pay a fine of Rs 31 lakh while other convicts Abdil has to pay Rs 1.5 lakh, Krishnan and Jasbir are ordered to pay Rs 1.25 lakh each and Avtar must pay Rs 75,000.
 
After this amount is collected, fifty per cent will go to Ranjit Singh's family. A sixth accused involved in this case died a year ago. The special CBI court in Haryana's Panchkula found all five guilty earlier this month.
 
The main convict Ram Rahim, has been lodged in Sunaria Jail in Rohtak district since his 2017 conviction for the rape of two followers. He appeared through video-conferencing while others were present in the court.
 
Police officials had tightened security in Panchkula and Sirsa the places where the sect is headquartered in anticipation of possible violence from Ram Rahim's followers.
 
The matter was dragged till today after counsel for the defence sought time to examine and counter some of the arguments the prosecution had made during the sentencing hearing.
 
The manager Ranjit Singh was also a follower of the sect, was shot dead in the year 2002. He was murdered after being suspected by Ram Rahim that he circulated anonymous letter that explains how women were being sexually exploited by Ram Rahim.
