Droupadi Murmu is India's next president

India's 15th president Droupadi Murmu will take over from Ram Nath Kovind

Droupadi Murmu, the NDA’s presidential candidate, will be the new occupant of
the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Murmu has crossed the 50 per cent mark at the end of
the third round of counting to become the country’s first tribal and the second
women president.

The unassuming politician, who started her career in public life as a councilor in
Odisha, secured 69 per cent of votes in the third round of counting and 53 per
cent in the Electoral College.

Born after India’s Independence, India's 15th president, who will take over from
Ram Nath Kovind, will also be the country’s youngest.

Droupadi Murmu travelled the country, campaigning for the election. Her victory
run appeared certain with support from a section of opposition parties - the BJD,
Shiv Sena, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, YSR Congress, BSP, TDP, boosting her
numbers.

As soon as her massive lead was announced, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led
the nation in congratulating the new President-elect.

“India scripts history. At a time when 1.3 billion Indians are marking Azadi Ka Amrit
Mahotsav, a daughter of India hailing from a tribal community born in a remote
part of eastern India has been elected our President! Congratulations to Smt.
Droupadi Murmu Ji on this feat,” PM Modi tweeted.

Conceding his position, the Opposition's presidential nominee Yashwant Sinha
also extended his wishes to Droupadi Murmu.

“I join my fellow citizens in congratulating Smt Droupadi Murmu on her victory in
the Presidential Election 2022. India hopes that as the 15th President of the

Republic she functions as the Custodian of the Constitution without fear or favour,”
he said.
