Eknath Shinde, the new MAHA CM and Fadnavis as Dy CM

Eknath Shinde and BJP's Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the chief minister and deputy chief minister of Maharashtra on Thursday evening

Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis took oath as chief minister and deputy chief minister, respectively, at Raj Bhavan on Thursday evening.

Almost everybody in Maharashtra expected Devendra Fadnavis as the new chief minister of the state, but in a twist, Fadnavis announced that Eknath Shinde would be the next CM in a press conference on Thursday afternoon.

Fadnavis also said he would not be a part of the Maharashtra government. However, within an hour, BJP president JP Nadda said that the party high command wanted Devendra Fadnavis to become the deputy CM.

Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari administered the oath of office to them at Raj Bhavan in south Mumbai shortly after 7:30 pm.

Shinde began by paying tributes to late Shiv Sena leaders Bal Thackeray and Anand Dighe. His supporters shouted slogans hailing Bal Thackeray and Anand Dighe as he finished taking the oath.

"Development of the state is my priority. I will take all sections of society along with me," Shinde said after the ceremony.
