Maharishi Valmiki Jayanti 2021: Date, time, significance

The great Maharishi Valmiki is also known as Adi Kavi

The Valmiki Jayanti which is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki and this year it will be observed on Wednesday, 20 October.

 

The great Maharishi Valmiki is also known as Adi Kavi. He was a great sage and author of the epic mythology Ramayana which consists of 24,000 verses and seven cantos or Kandas including the Uttara canto. He is revered as the first poet of Sanskrit literature.

 

According to the Hindu lunar calendar, Maharishi Valmiki was born on Ashwin Purnima.

 

Date and Time:

 

This year it will be celebrated on 20 October wednesday. The auspicious Purnima Tithi Begins on 07:03 PM on 19 October and ends on 08:26 PM on 20 October.

 

Significance :

 

According to Ramayana, Lord Rama met Valmiki during his period of exile and interacted with him and Valmiki gave shelter to Sita in his hermitage when Rama exiled her. Kusha and Lava sons of Lord Rama and Sita were born in the hermitage of Valmiki and he taught Ramayana to both twins.

 

PM Modi also payed his respects for the great sage. "I bow in reverence to Maharishi Valmiki on the special occasion of Valmiki Jayanti. We recall his seminal contributions towards chronicling our rich past and glorious culture. His emphasis on social empowerment keeps inspiring us." said PM Modi. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi payed his humble tribute to Maharishi Valmiki.
