Major fire breaks out at Rourkela Steel Plant

It is estimated that the fire broke out due to boiling in the slag pot

In a tragic incident, a major fire broke out at the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Odisha at around 3 am on Monday.


As per the reports the calamity had taken place at SMS-II of the steel plant where molten iron got dispersed leading to the outbreak of the fire. It is estimated that the fire broke out due to boiling in the slag pot.


Though no one was injured in the incident, production has been affected. The control room was severely damaged and many instruments were fully burned down. Electronic equipment and electrical appliances worth lakhs have been damaged.


The CEO and other senior officers of the steel plant visited the spot and work is on-going to restore the cable and normalcy at the earliest. The Station House Officer (SHO) had visited the accident site to collect further information. The Fire Services personnel had also rushed to the spot and to stop the spreading of fire.


The Chief Executive Officer of Rourkela Steel Plant Deepak Chattaraj has ordered an investigation into the incident. After the incident a four-member team has been formed by the RSP authorities to find out the reason behind the fire mishap.


Till now the work at SMS-II has been temporarily stopped after the accident.
