Mamata to lead TMC in Parliament

She took over from Member of Parliament Sudip Bandyopadhyay.

West Bengal's ruling party supremo Mamata Banerjee has been chosen as the chairperson of Trinamool Congress parliamentary party, Derek O’Brien announced on Friday. This comes just ahead of her Delhi visit next week.

Mamata took over from Member of Parliament Sudip Bandyopadhyay. This move will make the chief minister one of the few political leaders to head the party in the parliament without getting elected to the Lower or Upper House.

It may be recalled that Sonia Gandhi had led the Congress parliamentary party when she became chief of the party in 1998.

“Mamata Banerjee will become our Trinamool parliamentary party chairperson. This is a reality we are formalising. Mamata Banerjee is a seven-time MP. She was already guiding the parliamentary party. This is a strategic decision,” O’Brien said at a press conference in the capital on Friday.
