Man attempting suicide on live video, saved after US office alerts Delhi police

Facebook US spotted the man video as 'self-harm' video and alerted CyPAD, the nodal cyber unit of Delhi police

A Delhi man in city’s Palam village attempted to take his own life on the intervening nights of June 3 and June 4 saved by police in a nick of time.

The 39-year-old man decided to take his own life and broadcast the act live on Facebook after a fight with neighbour.

The man would have died had it not been for Facebook's alertness and prompt response by the Delhi Police. Facebook US spotted the man video as 'self-harm' video and alerted CyPAD, the nodal cyber unit of Delhi police at around 12.50 am on Thursday night. The alert was part of a coordination framework set up between CyPAD and social media platforms.

He was brought to the emergency ward of the AIIMS Trauma centre in New Delhi with deep self-inflicted cuts on his hands.

The man lost a significant amount of blood but survived solely because he was given medical attention in time. The man is a widower and works at a sweet shop and also a father of two. He had been dealing with personal issues since the death of his wife in 2016.
