As per a latest buzz, Manoj Malaviya is taking over as the West Bengal Director-General of Police today, which means the state’s current DGP Virendra is retiring on the same day. Malaviya is an IPS officer of 1987 batch.
For the selection of the post, the Bengal government has to send a list of names for the next DGP to the UPSC, and the commission prepares a panel based on merit and seniority. The state then picks the candidate from this panel. The state had sent a list of 21 names from 1986 to 1991 batches.
However, till Tuesday morning, the name of the next DGP had not been selected and shared to the Bengal government. Since DGP Virendra is scheduled to retire today, the next officer in terms of seniority, Manoj, was selected the “acting” DGP by the state government.
