Murder accused Sushil Kumar could lose Padma Shri award

After a charge sheet is filed, the award may be cancelled by the President

Indian wrestler Sushil Kumar could lose Padma Shri as he is accused of involvement in a scuffle at the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi that resulted in junior wrestler Sagar Rana’s murder on May 4 mid-night. For now Sushil Kumar has been sent to 6-day police custody as the Delhi Police’s crime branch takes over the case.

As per Padma Awards scheme, the President of India has the authority to revoke the award and benefits. Now the committee could review the Padma Shri award on a suomotu basis and recommend to the President of India to annul the award at the charge sheet state.

After a charge sheet is filed, the award may be cancelled by the President and in case he is acquitted later, the orders cancelling the award may be withdrawn.

As per the Padma Award Scheme, it is stated: “The President may cancel and annul the award of the decoration to any person and thereupon his name shall be erased from the Register and he shall be required to surrender the decoration and the Sanad. But it shall be competent for the President to restore the decoration and the Sanad and to withdraw the orders of cancellation and annulment.”

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) also clarifies their distance from senior wrestler. In twitter it stated that “Our annual Contract list now many senior wrestlers are out. Those didn’t take part in the championship. We have faith in our judiciary system. Nobody is big or small in our law. Doshi ko sajja milegi hi”
