Bappi Lahiri, the man of music and ‘gold’ passed away on Tuesday. He has enthralled the world with music compositions and a unique voice. The cause of his demise is said to be sleep apnea. So what do you know about this disease? Let’s try to find out.


Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder in which the breathing process is repeatedly hampered while sleeping. The major signs of the disorder are that you snore loudly and feel fatigued even after a full night’s sleep.


There are three types of Sleep apnea.

Obstructive Sleep apnea is the most common type. In this form of disorder, throat muscles obstruct comfortable breathing.

2.      Central sleep apnea: in this type, the brain’s signaling to muscles that control breathing is impaired.


3.      Complex sleep apnea syndrome: it is the most serious type of Sleep apnea. Complex sleep apnea disorder means when both obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea trouble a person in breathing. 




· Loud snoring is the most common symptom of sleep apnea. 

· Breathing in patients stops episodically while sleeping. 

· Person with sleep apnea gasps for air during his sleep. 

· The patient wakes up with a dry mouth.

· Person suffering from sleep apnea is usually plagued by morning headaches.  

· In some cases, patients may find it hard to sleep at night, whereas excessive sleepiness may be felt during the daytime.

· Person having sleep apnea, find it difficult to focus. 


Change in Lifestyle 

In mild cases of sleep apnea, doctors suggest a lifestyle change. According to medical experts, regular exercise can be very helpful in treating the sleep disorder. Quitting Cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking can also improve the condition. Losing some kilograms will also help you fight against sleep apnea. 


Positive airway pressure
Someone suffering from sleep apnea may benefit from positive airway pressure. The treatment involves a small machine is placed on the nose and mouth at night that provides high-pressure air and prevents any episodic breathlessness.




 It is another device that is pretty useful in treating sleep apnea. It is an alternative for those who cannot use positive airway pressure. These devices can be used for both severe as well as for mild sleep apnea. Oral devices can allow patients to sleep comfortably and improve their health.
