COVID seen affecting embryos, may lead to miscarriages

Cases have been reported from private and civic-run hospitals.

While initially recognised as causing respiratory disease, the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19 disease, also affects many other organs.

An ICMR study with National Institute for Research in Reproductive Health have now seen that even five-day old embryos can be affected by COVID-19. The infection is spread to them in the womb through infected mothers.

It can increase the chances of miscarriage or even in cases it can sometimes not allow to conceive. Cases have been reported from private and civic-run hospitals but altogether there is no cumulative data available for the number of miscarriages which happened to pregnant women surfing from covid-19.

It was also seen that the virus was also transmitted through the fertilisation process in IVF labs. The same cells also help the virus grow more in the embryos resulting in ultimate death of it.
