Maha CM Uddhav Thackeray hints at lockdown as situation worsens

It also stated that his government will address the issues of the livelihood of the poor, labourers and daily-wagers

Maharashtra is the worst hit state of India which fall prey to the second wave of Covid surge in India. According to April 9, after the new additions, the total of active cases has reached 5,34,603 in the state. Night curfew in several places in the state is already undergoing.


In view of rising concern Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday indicated that the imposition of a strict lockdown in the state was likely to be impose in order to save the lives of people and to break the chain of transmission.


A statement released by CMO quoted that "The number of patients is increasing so fast that if we do not decide on a lockdown today, a lockdown-like situation will automatically arise tomorrow. Today the situation is getting worse. We are also constantly considering Covid-19 task force experts in the state." It also stated that his government will address the issues of the livelihood of the poor, labourers and daily-wagers.


In a meeting attended by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, ministers Ashok Chavan, Balasaheb Thorat, Dilip Walse Patil, Eknath Shinde, Jayant Patil, Rajesh Tope, Amit Deshmukh, along with state Congress president Nana Patole, Leader of Opposition in Assembly Devendra Fadnavis, Pravin Darekar, state BJP chief Chandrakant Patil and others, Maharashtra chief secretary Sitaram Kunte briefed about the prevailing situation in the state and the challenges faced by the state government to contain the spread of the virus.


It is also decided that the government will particularly act on the suggestions such as ensuring the availability of Remedisivir injections; early receipt of test reports and necessary instruction to the laboratory, besides the careful planning for ensuring availability of oxygen.


However, some members of the Shiv Sena-Congress-Nationalist Congress Party alliance of the state and the opposition BJP raised apprehensions over the suggestion to impose lockdown in the state as people had already suffered in the last year due to lockdown. The Opposition want that a financial package should be announced first.
