Nearly 4 lakh kids are affected by 'Fragile X Syndrome' in India

FXS affects children and can lead to delayed speech, delayed development, Sensory processing disorders, problems in motor skills and hyperactivity

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is a rare inherited condition that causes intellectual disability and autism in children.

In the recent past, actor Boman Irani spread an awareness post on Instagram about Fragile X syndrome. It is matter of concern as nearly four lakh children in India alone are affected by this syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome is a genetic disorder. FXS is caused by changes in a gene that scientists called the fragile X mental retardation 1 (FMR1) gene. Fragile X syndrome has an X-linked receding inheritance which is typically caused by an expansion of the CGG triplet repeat within the FMR1.

FXS affects children and can lead to delayed speech, delayed development, Sensory processing disorders, problems in motor skills and hyperactivity. This particular disorder is most commonly inherited, and a single gene is the cause for this intellectual disability and autism.

It also affects a child's learning, behaviour, appearance, and health. Symptoms can be mild or more severe. Boys often have a more serious form of it than girls.

According to Webmd the symptoms include:-

#Trouble learning skills like sitting, crawling, or walking.

#Problems with language and speech.

#Hand-flapping and not making eye contact.

#Temper tantrums.

#Poor impulse control.

#Anxiety.

#Extreme sensitivity to light or sound.

#Hyperactivity and trouble paying attention

Children who are born with this genetic condition can get special education and therapy to help them learn and develop like other kids. Medicines and other treatments can improve their behaviour and physical symptoms.
