A Nationwide strike by farmers over farm law

The farmers are protesting against the three controversial agricultural bills that had been passed in Parliament in September

A one day nationwide strike had been called on by Farmer unions in India over new agricultural laws.  The strike comes after five rounds of talks between farmers’ unions and the government union which prove to be failure.


The farmers are protesting against the three controversial agricultural bills that had been passed in Parliament in September. These bills aimed at reforming agricultural sector and allowing farmers to market their produce. The three bills are Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020; Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020.


These bills have led much led controversies among the opposition. Farmers’ association said that the bill does not guarantee the acquisition of farm produce through state-run organizations that guarantee a minimum support price (MSP).
