Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Akhilesh Yadav arrested; Priyanka Gandhi detained

Akhilesh’s uncle and Rajya Sabha member Ramgopal Yadav has also, reportedly, been arrested

In a move to deter protests over the killing of farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri on Sunday, the Yogi Adityanath-led government is moving to prevent opposition leaders from reaching the area.
In a latest development, Akhilesh Yadav was arrested as he was sitting on dharna outside his house in Lucknow on Monday. The Samajwadi Party alleged that Akhilesh was placed under house arrest late on Sunday. Media reports showed a large security presence outside the residence of Akhilesh in Lucknow. He was due to travel to Lakhimpur Kheri on Monday.
Awanish Awasthi, additional chief secretary of the state home department, asked the Lucknow Airport not to allow Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder S Randhawa to land at the airport for their scheduled visit to Lakhimpur Kheri on Monday.
Akhilesh’s uncle and Rajya Sabha member Ramgopal Yadav has also, reportedly, been arrested. Another uncle, Shivpal Yadav, has been detained when travelling to Lakhimpur Kheri.
Awasthi informed the Lucknow Airport authorities that Section 144 had been imposed in Lakhimpur Kheri and "requested them not to allow the arrival of Baghel and Randhawa".
The Uttar Pradesh government has written to the Punjab chief secretary urging the state not to allow anyone to travel to Lakhimpur Kheri.
Meanwhile, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi was detained by police on her way to Lakhimpur Kheri at Hargaon. Rahul Gandhi tweeted, "Priyanka, I know you won't hold back - they are stunned by your courage. In this non-violent fight for justice, we will make the country's farmers win."
