Amidst the protest against the new farm laws, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday reached Saharanpur to attend Kisan Mahapanchayat. Kisan mahapanchayat is currently underway in Saharanpur. Earlier, Priyanka offered prayers at Shakumbhari Devi Temple situated at a distance of 40 km to the north of Saharanpur.
"I will be in Saharanpur to listen, understand, and share my feelings with the farmers as well as support their struggle. The BJP government will have to withdraw the black agriculture laws," she had tweeted on Wednesday morning.
She will also be participating in Kisan Panchayat under the party’s ‘Jai Jawan Jai Kisan’ campaign in 27 districts of Uttar Pradesh. The districts include Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Meerut, Bijnor, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, and more.
As per reports, several prominent Congress leaders will be present in the ten-day program. However, the Bhartiya Janata Party has lashed out at the Congress Party and Gandhis saying that Priyanka should rather attend the Maha Panchayat with 23 party dissenters.
Meanwhile, ahead of kisan mahapanchayat, Section 144 was imposed in Saharanpur district on Wednesday, due to reasons including upcoming festivities, COVID-19 pandemic and law and order. District Magistrate Saharanpur issued an order citing that the restrictions have been imposed till April 5.
