TMC to celebrate 'Khela Hobe Divas' today

Khela Hobe Divas will also be celebrated in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tripura, Haryana, Bihar and many other states.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is all set to mark August 16 as the 'Khela Hobe Divas' in the memory of football fans killed during a match in 1980. Khela Hobe', which generally means the game will be played, was the rallying cry of Bengal's ruling party for the recently-held West Bengal Assembly elections.

The party went on to register a resounding win in the elections, seeing off a formidable challenge from the PM Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party. Following the victory, TMC announced that it would observe 'Khela Hobe Divas' celebration. They also said it would distribute footballs among sports clubs on the occasion.

Apart from West Bengal, Khela Hobe will be celebrated in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Tripura, Haryana, Bihar and many other states. Some will celebrate under the flag of Trinamool Congress while others may not use any party symbol. But the slogan Khela Hobe will reach across India, said TMC leader Madan Mitra.
