West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is in talks to meet the the Election Commission of India in Delhi on Thursday. A TMC's delegation will reach the EC's office with the plea to hold the bypolls at the earliest.
According to sources, Bengal's ruling party will urge the body to spare a week's time for campaigning and take measures to conduct the bypolls in quick time.
For the unversed, by-elections are due in seven Assembly seats in West Bengal, including the two constituencies in Murshidabad — Samsherganj and Jangipur due to candidates' demise ahead of the Assembly polls.
The Cooch Behar's Dinhata seat and the Nadia's Santipur seat are too vacant after Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Nisith Pramanik and Jagannath Sarkar resigned as MLAs. Similarly, the Khardah seat in North 24-Parganas is also vacant after the demise of TMC candidate Kajal Sinha, however, was later declared the winner.
By-elections is also due in Bhowanipore seat in Kolkata after TMC minister Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay resigned.
