Ravi Shankar Prasad who is the Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Twitter account was locked on the platform for almost an hour over the copyright infringement.
This comes after a contention between the social media company Twitter and the central government over the issue of compliance with new IT rules.
The social media company locked the Minister's account for almost an hour on the charges that there was a violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) of the USA.
Prasad wrote,"Twitter's actions were in gross violation of Rule 4(8) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 where they failed to provide me any prior notice before denying me access to my own account."
The company takedown requests were filed by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry on behalf of Sony Music Entertainment. In this case, Prasad had use a song of composer A.R. Rahman’s , Ma Tujhe Salaam.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor who is also chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on IT replied to Prasad's tweet and said he will seek explanation from Twitter on the issue as he had faced a similar situation earlier for posting a video in his handle.
The social media company action comes at a time when it is at loggerheads with the central government over the new social media and intermediary guidelines. The Centre has declared that the company had failed to comply with the guidelines, to which it results in losing the safe harbour protection granted to intermediaries under the IT Act.
