Today India celebrates the 142nd birth anniversary of Sarojini Naidu. Her profound contribution to the world of poetry led Mahatma Gandhi to name her Nightingale of India. Her contribution is not restricted to poetry only, her vigorous work towards women empowerment is hard to overlook. She has also been played a pivotal role in India’s struggle for freedom.
She was the first woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress. In 1929 the British government also appreciated her contribution by honoring her with Kaisar-e-Hind award for her contribution to society during the plague epidemic.
Sarojini Naidu was a gifted poet. At the young age of 12, she penned 1300 line poem Lady of the Lake.

Sarojni Naidu was born on 13th February 1879. Her father was Dr Aghore Nath Chattopadhyay, was a famous scientist and philosopher of his time. In 1899 she was married to Dr Muthyala Govindrajulu Naidu. In 1949 Naidu died of cardiac and hence the nation lost its Nightingale.
