Punjab sets up its first genome sequencing facility

Previously, the samples were sent to the National Centre for Diseases Control in Delhi, which would take more than a month to get the results

Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu has confirmed that there is no presence of any new coronavirus variant among the one hundred samples tested at the newly set up COVID-19 genome sequencing facility at Patiala.

Previously, the samples were sent to the National Centre for Diseases Control in Delhi, which would take more than a month to get the results.

If a new variant is found in a specific place then there is an immediate need to conduct testing of all suspected patients to prevent the virus from spreading.

So now, as the state’s first genome sequencing facility at government medical college and hospital in Patiala is set up, the reports will be available in five to six days and quick actions can be taken.
