Ransomware attack on Tamil Nadu Public Department systems

The attack was confirmed by Information Technology Secretary Neeraj Mittal

The Tamil Nadu state government’s Public Department suffered a ransomware attack by hackers. Authorities are trying to secure back the access with experts.

 

The attack was confirmed by Information Technology Secretary Neeraj Mittal. He said “It is true. Some computers suffered the ransomware attack. We are trying to get back the access.”

 

The official said that the various cyber security agencies like Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing and other security agencies have been involved to get back the access. The police have also been informed about the attack.

 

Mittal was asked whether the attackers demanded any amount on which he said, "It is immaterial for us as we are trying to get back the access to the systems. The attack came during the weekend. On Monday we will focus on getting back the systems."

 

According to sources, ransom demand of $1,950 as cryptocurrency. The computers of the department were outdated and so the hackers easily targeted the system. Officials said no sensitive documents have been affected.
