Heavy rain batters Bengal

The Meteorological Department had issued an orange alert for Kolkata and other south Bengal districts

As heavy downpour caused by a low-pressure system over Bangladesh and West Bengal last night has affected normal life in Kolkata and other south Bengal districts on Thursday. A middle age man got electrocuted to death in Kolkata’s Jorabagan area while three others were injured in Alipore.


Police officials has also identified the victim as Darpanarayan Tagore Street resident Kashinath Jyoti and died while trying to lower the shutters of a shop. According to sources, the other three were injured on the Alipore court premises after they got electrocuted.


Another incident, a portion from the top floor of a three-storied empty residential building in the Amherst Street area collapsed and fell on a car that was parked under the building. Though, no one was injured.


The Meteorological Department has forecast more downpour. The department has issued an orange alert for Kolkata, Bankura, Purulia and other south Bengal districts as well as a red alert has been issued in Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Paschim and Purba Medinipur, and Jhargram district.
