The creator of McAfee antivirus software, John McAfee was found dead in Barcelona prison in an apparent suicide on Wednesday.
The tech founder was arrest on October 3, 2020 at the Barcelona airport as he was about to board a flight to Istanbul with a British passport. On Wednesday the Spain's high court agreed to extradite McAfee to the United States to face charges on tax evasion, punishable by decades in prison.
The regional justice department confirmed that a U.S. man, aged 75 awaiting extradition was found dead in prison on Wednesday.
McAfee's lawyer, Javier Villalba said that the 75-year old McAfee, the anti-virus software pioneer died by hanging as his nine months in prison brought him to despair.
He was an accused on tax evasion charges in Tennessee after failing to report income from promoting crypto currencies.
McAfee had worked for NASA, Xerox and Lockheed Martin before introducing his eponymous program in 1987. He sold his company to Intel in 2011 and no longer had involved in the business. The software still conveys his name and has 500 million users across the world.
