Man finds 'weird-looking' deep-sea fish on US Beach

The fish has a phosphorescent bulb on the end which can emit light to attract credulous prey closer to it

A man walking along a beach in southern California find a weird looking creature which later turns out to be a quite rare deep sea fish.


The man identified as Ben Estes, came across this bizarre creatures and the remarkable photos went viral across the internet. The "amazingly rare find" washed ashore on Friday morning at California's Newport Beach.


It has been identified as a deep sea Pacific Football fish, which is a species of anglerfish that are normally dwells at depths more than 3,000 ft. below the surface.


It is one of more than 300 living species of anglerfish from around the world. Though the fish itself is not rare, it is extremely rare to see one this intact along a beach in southern CA.


The fleshy long dorsal fin, called an ilium, extends in the front of the mouth and has a phosphorescent bulb on the end which can emit light to attract credulous prey closer to it.
