Ranil Wickremesinghe appointed Sri Lanka's new PM

Sri Lanka, already struggling with a deep economic crisis, witnessed violent clashes and faced chaos on Monday when Prime Minister Rajapaksa stepped down from his post, nulling the elected government

Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka's veteran political leader has been appointed the next PM of the island nation by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The 73-year-old was administered the oath of office by the President, declared Prime Minister and his cabinet will be put in place this week.

Days ago country's largest opposition party refused to join any government headed by a member of the Rajapaksa clan and in that situation,  a four-time Prime Minister of the country, Mr Wickremesinghe was the only option.
Mr Wickremesinghe heads the United National Party. According to reports, members of the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, a section of the main Opposition SJB  (Samagi Jana Balawegaya) and other parties had expressed their support for Wickremesinghe in Parliament.
